Thumbs up Dune Control for Windows

Notice: this thread is part 2 of my first thread. Editing posts was not possible at the time of creating this.

EDIT: september 10 2012

Hello Forum

As a result of ongoing changes in various web services used by the original Dune Remote app (for those who have used it in the past), I've decided to remove all links from this page. Instead, I recommend you use the follow-up release, even though it may seem very limited compared to the original app. The latest version of that can be found by following the hyperlink below.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14454764/Dun...ol/publish.htm
For best results, always use the latest firmware, including beta releases.

How is this different from the original app?
I was still learning the ropes of object-oriented programming when I created this thread. I made a few beginners' mistakes, making it very difficult for me to add new features to the code after a firmware update. I could go back and patch code every time over and over again, but instead I decided to start fresh with the release of IP control version 2. This time around, I took a much more prudent approach, paying close attention to industry standards, best practices and coding conventions.

Meaning what exactly?
There's no more complicated interfaces that require you to be a rocket engineer in order to figure out how to operate them. This is a double-edged sword however. You'll find that it is much easier to do simple things like starting playback, but on the other hand you'll have a much more difficult time setting advanced playback options.

The idea behind this minimalistic approach is that you don't necessarily need these (hidden) features, but eventually most people will discover them through regular use.
I know for a fact that there are more features in the IP control protocol than what is available to me in the app. What's the hold-up? (Example: emulating IR codes)
Most of the code is there, but there's no graphical interface for it yet. And I have no problem admitting it: I suck at graphic design.

UPDATE: Version 1.4
I announce with great pleasure that version 1.4 is now public!
This update carries the biggest amount of noticeable changes across all my releases. These changes are mostly just graphical, but they greatly improve user experience.

One thing that makes a great difference is the option to play files from the Dune's attached storage, bypassing the SMB protocol (so no unnecessary network streaming is done). This drastically reduces loading times and increases responsiveness.

Use the built-in updater or download the latest version at -outdated link removed-

Please let me know if you spot any bugs, and don't forget to click the Thanks button.

Guys, I need your input on a little something.
I'm working on keyboard integration, with the next release you'll be able to control the player with the arrow keys, volume keys, play/pause keys etc. on your computer keyboard.

For typing text (new folder names and such), I had the idea of sending multiple commands the same way you would type it with the remote, but in a more automated manner.
For example: "DUNE" = 1x num3, 2x num8, 2x num6, 2x num3.

How would you rather see this implemented?
  1. type anywhere inside the application and the commands will immediately go through to the player
  2. dedicated textfield for entering text, confirm with a button
  3. other

Either way has its drawbacks: directly sending all text through is faster, but you can't paste text. A textfield does allow pasting text but is not as fast and you can't set capitalization the way you want it.

Who's up for some beta testing? PM me or leave a reply (either here or on the blog post). It won't be long until the next release but lots of testing still needs to be done!

I'm still looking for testers! Don't be shy now.

New features (so far) include better internet radio support (I've included a basic shoutcast browser to better demonstrate this); file drag and drop; keyboard navigation and a whole range of major improvements. I've rewritten alot of core components to allow for multithreading and a better visual representation of what's going on.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing changes is support for windows 7's taskbar progressbar. The progressbar in the application window now also changes color and animation depending on the current playback.

Furthermore, It's finally possible to hold down a handful of buttons (volume up/down; page up/down; arrow buttons) instead of having to spam click them.

If you want to try it, just drop a reply or a PM in return for a download link. No obligations, but my spare time is limited due to college so all feedback is appreciated.

UPDATE: Version 1.5
WOW I am REALLY excited about this release! Who loves free music? I think we all do. Unfortunately, up til now it has always been a pain to tune into internet radio stations BUT NOT ANYMORE!

This release brings support for internet radio stations, it's now as easy as pasting the link and pressing start. Even better, try one of the many thousands of free online radion stations from the ShoutCast directory. Pick a station by genre, by top stations or let the application pick stations at random. It's all there and only a few mouseclicks away.

Other features include a more attractive interface aswell as a taskbar progressbar. Now you can keep track of the current playback position just by looking at the taskbar! Not to forget you can now also use your keyboard to navigate the menus, change the volume, type in text etc. Really exciting stuff, trust me!

A full changelog can be found on my blog. Use the built-in updater or download the latest version at -outdated link removed-

Please let me know if you spot any bugs, and don't forget to click the Thanks button.

I'm taking the first steps towards a filebrowser that reads dune_folder.txt files (used by yaDIS, My Movies, Dune Explorer,...)

As you can see, this is a movie index created by My Movies 4, default template.
The idea is to replicate the Dune's behaviour in every way possible to give you that same look and feel, with the added comfort of controlling everything from behind your computer.
