Default NSLU2 or...?

Since I read a small howto guide on tomshardware.com a long time ago, I have been very impressed with the NSLU2. I am now thinking of getting one, but since I know little about NAS stuff I thought it would be a good idea to ask here first: is the NSLU2 the best choice for a 1350? What I want is an mp3 server and a movie server. HTTP and ftp would be good too, but not necessary at all. Also, when the time comes I would be able to run HD stuff from it.
Is the NSLU2 the one to get? I like the price on the unit, but as I said, I know little about the technical stuff.

Hi Martin,

The NSLU2 is the cheapest solution and stable thx to the community who
designs installation packages for adding FTP functions and Media Server
solutions. It requires a little effort from your end but does the trick if you
are not looking for safe data storage with a lot of options and if you are tight to a budget.

Other possible solutions of interest in lower budget case are the Maxtor
Shared Storage devices (slightly prefered over NSLU2).

When not bound to budget, the ReadyNAS NV is one hell of a device.
Also the other ReadyNAS 600 are good devices coming in Snazio branding
as well (Snazio Terra Nas HD Pro)

Enjoy
Hi-Jack

Regarding the maxtor shared storage II: is it possible to install your own choice of server software on it, or does my player have to be upnp compliant?

for the record: i use the transgear dvx-500e and I would like to run oxylbox without a PC using up power all the time.

thx

There are several packages available but i'm not aware if Oxylbox is one of them. There's a community for MSS somewhere on the net but don't know the link no more...

Can't catch up with everything while i'm doing what i'm doing, which is a
surprise

Enjoy

Default NSLU2, snazio and wizd

I brought one of these babies in Staples when they were on offer (half price). Because I knew the manager in the shop and I ask why the box had been opened, she then gave me a further 10% off, so it cost me about 32 pounds.

I immediately doubled the processor speed by taking out the resistor - but trying to telnet into the boot process has proven to be hard. ie I'm not fdaster enough with my fingers.

However, I have UNSLUNG (6. and I'm running WIZD. I'm also running media servers on my iMACS and WIndows XP, but prefer to use the NSLU2 since it sit there doing nothing but NAS and media serving. I was going to use it as an iTUNES server but my wife still prefers to load CD's!

Having told all my former colleagues about the deal at Staples, they all rushed down to the local store and when I went to get a second unit to use purely as a linux box - they had sold out and then put the price up! Maybe I look on e-bay.

Despite being in IT for more than 30+ years and being a wiz-kid on operating systems across very many hardware platforms, stepping back to use basic UNIX commands is not something I'm enjoying, but be assured, I'd more than recommend these little boxes. If only they had been around fiften years ago, I would have saved my employer millions!

So bottom line is buy a number of these little babies and use them to fully automate your home and life.

Thanks for the advice guys, Im gonna check into that Maxtor thingie as well. As it looks now Im heading for an NSLU2 since it seems to do what I ask for. Im running wizd on my computer atm, so that option on the slug is really welcome.
Great site, great people and great advice! Thanks again!

Wizd can be setup on the following NAS :
- Linksys NSLU2
- Freecom FSG-3
- Synology DS101(G)
- Kurobox / Buffalo Linkstation
- Infrant ReadyNAS (last firmware is bundled with Wizd)
(maybe I miss some NAS ?!)

For Maxtor MSS, I heard some people were trying but I dunno I they succeed in. There's a Wizd package for mipsel, but you need also dependencies (also available)... more tests are needed though.
