DP-558 delayed without setting new date but...
Hi all,
I know so many of you are waiting for the KiSS DP-558.
Amongst you, we find several that pre-ordered the KiSS DP-558 but you all
will have to wait longer then expected. The reason why...?
We talked to KISS today by phone (phone bills phone bills)
and hat a chat for about a half hour.
- New Gui design will be implemented on KiSS DP-558 prior to release!
- New Gui and all enhancements after release from DP-558 will be added to
DP-5xx and DP-15xx series. (MAybe also DP-450)
- New Kernel is a success and will be further improved for stability!
MPC Expected Date for KiSS DP-558: Between 1 and 15 August 2004!
(Not confirmed by KiSS)
It's good and bad news at the same time but it's news...
Don't shoot the messemger!

I was expected to buy DP-600 (or may be even DP-604 , you know streaming video is probably better with HD) by then , now I assume DP-6xx series will arrive at Crismas
Yes , I know , someone may say I am never happy , but I believe that there is a time and place for everything and KiSS once again misses the target.
I surtenly do like the idea that my "old" DP-500 will get new better firmware and even retain it's value , and I am very glad that KiSS finaly decided to release finished product , however at this point , well lets do the calculation - DP-558 at August , this means new firmwares for DP-(1)50x at least in September and while I really have no idea when DP-6xx series will come out I know two things :
1. It will be too late for competition.
2. Sigma EM8500/8550 chipsets used in our playes are too outdated even with best improovments they will never play QPel for example while $60-70 MTK based players do, this means me and most of other KiSS customers will eventally replace their players with a new generation , so I may be shooting at my leg here but I think it could be much smarter policy on KiSS side to concentrate on newer players instead.

The way the 558 plans have gone, I think it's more like 2005...Never ASSUME with KiSS or they make an ASS out of U and ME!
I'm very happy that my 500 will see some improvements...especially a new GUI and hopefully making it easier for fclage's EzLink to abandon the old ways and serve up my shared network files via KML.
As for people waiting for the 558, I personally think that it will take a very long time for KiSS to get their act together and completely support the TV recording functionality. As for me, I am waiting for Meedio to be released later this summer so I can start building my own machine that does exactly what I want it to do, not what some company like KiSS thinks I should have...
But I'm still proud to own my 500, which I consider the first quality networked dvd player ever, nevermind the little bugs!

I notice we get loads of different comments, some bad, some positive.
However, in July/August i will go to Denmark (after the hollidays) en have a
weekend talking with KiSS guys. (on our own expense)!
After that, the new strategie should be clear.
We'll talk about the whole deal, old players, newplayers (dp-558 et dp-600),
support desk, tests, the bugs, the request lists etc...
Everything will pass the revue.
Now that should become a serieus update for the site and we can see all yhese changes and judge rather it's worth waiting to buy it.

Forget the DP-558 ?
I was just finished testing Matroska stuff (very good, multiple audio streams, multiple subtitles, attached files like covers, etc) when I read about new delay on DP-558.
With news codecs, players and other stuff every month, I start thinking that solution is fanless (no noise) multimedia PCs instead of "never ready", "never up to date" and "never delivered" DP-558.... 8O
Should I cancel my order...
