Dloaded the update from the region free section for the 2.8.3 firmware, did the iso and started the upgrade, pressed enter as instructed but was told update failed, DVD players fine but any ideas why i get this error and it wont patch the drive ???

Try installing version 2.8.0. (Then region free patch)
If that fails, install version 2.7.4. (Then region free patch)

Yes, if you have the 1712 drive, it's ok to go backwards.
Only for DLS and Toshiba 1802 drive this can cause error cause support for these types of drives is not in previous firmware.
1712 is supported in previous versions.
