Default DP558: what's the best wireless solution

Hi all,

I just moved to a new house after three months hard work, and now my DP558/80GB has no ethernet cable connection nearby! So now I'm looking for a flawlessly working wireless connection to my linksys router.

Is wifi good enough to stream media without interruptions/stills? What is in your opinion the best wireless solution?

Thanks for your feedback

Doesn't look as you have much choice...
Use Powerlines or a Bridge. Possibly Power Lines is the bettaer choice.

Try Linksys WET54G it works very fine with me.
I use it on a VR-558 without any problems

Hello Birdy 35,
you say your "Linksys WET54G" works very fine with your VR 558. I then have 2 questions for you:
- what are the performances (upload /download)
- did u have to insert a hub between the 2 devices to make it work (case for my belkin F5D7330 bridge)

Thks for your feedback.

HI all,

I had this setup once in my old apartment using the Linksys to stream my divx files on an MacMini from PGP virtual disks on external HDD's and I had some problems initially with stuttering but when I made the upgrade to 1.1.4 this went away.

I found file transfers slow but that might have been because of the limitation in the firmware, maybe if I had 1.1.7 then the problem might not have been an issue (will never know I guess)

Yes you need a hub between the wireless bridge and the kiss player which only costs a few dollers/euros/pounds or whatever your currency is.

Now I have ethernet cabling so my wireless bridge/hub are now obsolete

I'm using an airport express in WDS mode with my linksys WRT54G - took me a while to realise that it only accepts WEP as security, but the connection is fine, I have full FTP speed on my transfers.

I use a Linksys Wireless G WGA54G and the wireless router is a 3com office connect Wireless 11g.

But my system has an unstable transfer rate and newer above 600 kBytes/sec up or download. I tried to insert a hub between the KiSS and the WGA54G, but that only resulted in lower transfer speeds and a lot of colisions.

So my system is not perfect....

There is no hub/switch between them, I just programmed/configured the
WET54G with my computer and than connected it to the lan-port of the
558 and configured the settings of the 558 and everything worked
instantly

Transfer with WS_FTP is constant 1400KBytes/sec up and the same down

Hello Eric,
How lucky you are!

Your the first I see that managed to had a wifi interface with a Kiss without inserting a hub. Congratulations

As for me, I have to insert a hub or a switch to make it work, and even with that the performances are quite poor (600KB download from Kiss, 300 KB upload to Kiss) ! And if using a direct ethernet cable, more than 1MB (same with other wifi devices of my network).

Thanks for sharing your experience, I now know it's possible to have a good wifi connexion with this device!

Hi, I ran into a cheap (39€) Belkin F5D7330 in a dumpshop, and sofar it works well. First test with 1.1.6 FW gives 600kB/s, to be improved when I go to 1.1.7? Streaming of video and music goes smoothly. I first connected the device to my laptop to configure it, and the connected it to my dp558 without hub, and it worked instantly!

Thank you all for the feedback on my question

BR,
Hay
